Natalie Wood Case Remains Open, Ongoing: Sheriff

Investigators have not found any evidence to suggest the death was not accidental, but new developments could come at any time.

The case into the accidental death of actress Natalie Wood that was reopened in November remains open and ongoing, a Los Angeles Sheriff's spokesperson said Tuesday.

A top official told the Los Angeles Times in a report Tuesday that new evidence has yet to be found since investigators reopened the case. The official added that he was doubtful more investigating would change the overall conclusion that Wood's death was accidental.

Steve Whitmore of the sheriff’s department said there has been no compelling evidence that suggests otherwise in the case, but new developments could come at any time.

"It’s like being in the third quarter of a football game," Whitmore told NBC4 Los Angeles in a telephone interview. "As they [investigators] close out leads, some information may develop that changes entirely this momentary assessment. It’s an open investigation and new leads could change the outcome."

Wood drowned on Nov. 29, 1981, while boating off Catalina Island, Calif., with her husband Robert Wagner, actor Christopher Walken and friends. Rumors of drugs, alcohol and fights with husband Wagner all fueled speculation regarding her death.

The Oscar-nominated actress began her career at the young age of four, eventually appearing in more than 56 movies. She starred in classics "Miracle on 34th Street," "West Side Story" and "Rebel Without a Cause."
