Death Penalty Abolished in Connecticut

Connecticut's governor signed a new law Wednesday that eliminates the death penalty in the state. Gov. Dannel Malloy issued a statement calling it "an historic moment," The Associated Press reported. Malloy said the "unworkability" of the state's death penalty law was one of the factors that prompted him to sign the bill, NBC Connecticut reported. The bill will only apply to future sentences and the death penalty will be replaced with life in prison without the possibility of parole. The 11 men currently on death row will not be impacted by the new legislation. Connecticut joins 16 other states that have abolished the death penalty.
