Calif. “Maternity House” Shut Down

Authorities in the southern Californian city of San Gabriel shut down three townhouses that had been illegally converted into maternity centers for Chinese and Taiwanese women who’d traveled to the U.S. to give birth to American citizens. The women paid thousands of dollars to reach the center, where they stayed before and after giving birth, cops said. Birth tourism is not illegal, though GOP lawmakers have called for weakening or overturning 14th Amendment protections giving automatic citizenship for children born in the U.S.
