NASA Satellite Image Captures Scope of Burn Scars in the North Bay

NASA on Tuesday released an image that reveals the scope of wildfire destruction in the North Bay after a spate of blazes ripped through the region.

The photograph, which pictures burn scars in dark gray and vegetation in red, was captured from an instrument on NASA's Terra satellite, according to NASA.

Large chunks of land in Napa and Sonoma counties are now nothing more than scorched earth as a result of the blazes, which have claimed at least 42 lives and wiped out at least 8,400 homes and businesses.

The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer instrument used by NASA provides scientists with important information for surface mapping and monitoring of conditions such as the movement of glaciers, the health of coral reefs and the status of active volcanoes, among others.
