SUMMERTIME SKIING: Or almost. Us? We're still on the school-year system, which means that even though school was long ago we still think of summertime running from Memorial Day Weekend right through to Labor Day. So when one of our state's most bustling ski destinations announced that the slopes are going to stay cold and frosty right up to the beginning of June, well. We do the whole jaw-dropping thing, but then remember that various resorts occasionally offer Independence Day skiing. It isn't all that unusual, in other words, but, still: summer skiing. It's going to happen at Mammoth Mountain this year, which announced on Thursday, March 21 that it'll keep the lifts running right through the final weekend in May.
BUT BEFORE THEN... There's Mammoth Springfest, which isn't all that traditionally spring-y, if you're looking for flowers and leafy trees and such. Rather, it's a long stretch through the third week in April with a few deals and special events. Easter is a big holiday on the mountain, providing such one-of-a-kind kid activities like helmet and pole decoration. And, yep, there's an egg hunt, but it is inside a lodge, so wee hands won't have to go digging in the snow. Another kidly treat? Woolly -- the mammoth mascot of the area -- skis each Saturday.
