Instagram for Android Reaches 1 Million Downloads

More than a million Android users downloaded photo-sharing app Instagram in the first 24 hours, then left more than 64,000 reviews on Google Play.

Instagram's launch of the Android app seemed to take forever, with founder Kevin Systrom suggesting a launch since December. March, however,  seemed to bring the most persistent rumors -- and we wrote about them, including the possible launch and last week, when Instagram asked prospective Android users to sign up to for the new app.

Within 24 hours, the app was downloaded more than a million times and its more than 64,000 reviews on Google Play are mostly glowing. The numbers come out to about 2,000 sign-ups a minute, according to The Next Web.

The numbers shouldn't be surprising when you realize Instagram had 30 million uses just on iOS, and Android's millions of users could just as easily download as much if not more. However  Instagram is still free and doesn't appear to be making money off of the app, instead it's living off of venture capital cash. Instagram is likely to start making money by selling user information to advertisers/third parties at a later date.
