Facebook Tests Disappearing Posts

Facebook has decided to emulate Snapchat and is now testing disappearing status updates, reports say.

The new Facebook feature will let users make their posts disappear after an hour up to seven days, according to information provided to CNN. A Facebook spokesman said that the test feature is a "small pilot" only available to a lucky few using the Facebook application on iOS devices.

Some of those users have been posting pictures of the test, including one pointing out that Facebook gives users seven options to set their posts to disappear at: 1, 3, 6 12 and 24 hours, and 2 or 7 days.

Obviously, Facebook is trying to co-opt the idea from Snapchat, the ephemeral photo-sharing app that chief executive Mark Zuckerberg reportedly tried to buy for $3 billion but was rebuffed. That led to Facebook instead buying the similar WhatsApp for $19 billion, and some of its know-how going into Facebook's latest standalone app, Slingshot.

Still, the new feature could be a boon for users who need answers in a short amount of time, or it can be used as a way to declutter users' streams.
