Drivers Trapped After 40-Vehicle Pileup on Indiana Interstate

An Indiana interstate was shut down in both directions for several hours Tuesday after a a multi-vehicle crash left drivers trapped during a snowy morning commute.

Indiana State Police said the pileup happened on Interstate 74 near mile marker 168 in Dearborn County.

According to Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, the scene involved 40 vehicles at two crash sites within a half-mile of each other. 

Wheeles said Tuesday morning first responders were working to free people that were trapped in their vehicles after the pileup. It was not immediately clear if anyone was injured in the crash.

The roadway was shut down in both directions at exit 164 for several hours, with eastbound lanes reopening just after 4 p.m., authorities said.

A Winter Weather Advisory was in effect for the area until 7 p.m. Tuesday. Forecasts called for 1-3 inches of snow and wind gusts near 30 mph. 

Forecasters warned the weather could make for hazardous travel. The snow closed several area roadways and caused numerous accidents Tuesday morning, officials said.
