Convicted Felon Arrested After Critically Injuring 68-Year-Old Woman

Police believe Christopher Arenas assaulted multiple people while breaking into their homes.

A 40-year-old convicted felon on a new, violent crime spree attacked and critically injured a 68-year-old woman in her house in West Covina, and has been arrested, police said today.

Officers located Christopher Arenas about 11:55 p.m. Saturday hiding behind the $3.99 Pizza Co., 2435 S. Azusa Ave., the West Covina Police Department reported. Arenas initially ran from officers but was eventually found hiding in some bushes, police said.

Arenas had been out on post-release community supervision for vehicle theft and prior convictions for burglary, auto theft, being a felon in possession of a firearm and parole violations, according to the West Covina Police Department.

On Thursday night, a man later identified as Arenas broke into a house in the 3000 block of Loggers Lane Thursday night, and was confronted by a resident.

"The suspect assaulted the resident and fled on foot," according to a police statement. "The resident sustained minor injuries to his face. A car was stolen from the parking lot near the Corner Tavern bar (at 3660 Nogales St.) and later located abandoned at Shadow Oak Park.

"Two more burglaries occurred on the 2400 block of Belinda Street, which is just north of Shadow Oak Park. In both instances the residents confronted the suspect. The suspect fled on foot, injuring himself in the process."

Police believe Arenas attempted to steal a different car in the area.

"Officers conducted an extensive search but were unable to find the suspect," police said.

Officers responded about 7 a.m. Friday to a report of a burglary in progress in the 3000 block of Cindy Street, police said. "The suspect broke into the home and assaulted the resident, a 68- year-old female, and fled the location," police said.

"The female was transported to a local hospital in critical condition."
