California State Fair: Tickets on Sale

Rides, treats, pigs, and prize-winning crafts take the Sacramento spotlight this July.

WHATEVER YOU HAVE IN YOUR FRIDGE... around the beginning of May is probably not too dissimilar to what was there at the beginning of April and the beginning of March, too. Where we're going with this is easy to grok: Our at-home eating patterns tend to stay fairly consistent, at least in terms of the tried, true, and tasty staples we turn to on a daily basis. But, along about summer, when the first Ferris wheels begin to turn and the first throw-a-ring game flicks on the lights, our at-home hankerings are often ruffled by some outside, highly seasonal temptations: fair food. And one of the titans on the midway-merry, quirky-cuisine schedule just happens to be the (very) longtime state hoop-di-doo for the Golden State, none other than the world-famous California State Fair. If you're already dreaming of summer-style snacking, from corn dogs to fried candy bars, you can...

PURCHASE YOUR DISCOUNT TICKET NOW: That's right, as of this typing, deals are available for those who want to snack at the Sactown staple (and ride rides and pet goats and eye beautifully made quilts and see concerts). A single-day adult admission to the July 14-30 everything-fest is ten bucks, but, as is the way with the state fair, there are passes and promotional days to consider. As for what you'll be chowing down on? Look to some of the highlights of recent years to get your appetite stoked: Deep-fried pastrami pizza, corn on the cob wrapped in bacon, and a peanut butter and jelly cheesecake that's been deep-fried and slathered in bubble gum frosting have made colorful, take-a-photo cameos in the past. What will you have to nosh upon, and later brag about, in 2017? The foods in our pantry may stay consistent, but when the California State Fair arrives, all bets are off (or, rather, all bites are on your plate).
