Cairo Women's Protest Met with Anger, Attacks

A thousand Egyptian women demanding equal rights, respect and an end to sexual harassment gathered in Cairo’s Tahrir Square on Tuesday, falling far short of the Million Woman March’s crowd count goal. Demonstrators said they were ridiculed and physically attacked by angry men. A writer from Egyptian newspaper Al Masry Al Youm reported witnessing a counter-demonstrator punch a woman in the face. Feminist activists say Egypt’s revolution can’t leave half of the population behind. “Women have great expectations and rights that need to be fulfilled. We still have a long way to go,” doctor and demonstrator Moushira Khattab told The Daily Beast.
