Knife-Wielding Man Shot Dead by Deputies in Perris, Police Say

An allegedly knife-wielding man who attacked a woman at a Perris residence was fatally shot by sheriff's deputies, authorities said Wednesday.

The deputy-involved shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at a house in the 1800 block of El Nido Avenue, near Sunset Avenue, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Lt. Chris Willison said patrol deputies were called to the location to investigate reports of an assault, which might have stemmed from a domestic confrontation, though that was unconfirmed.

Willison alleged that when deputies contacted the suspect, whose identity was not released, the man was armed with a knife and refused orders to drop it, culminating in one of the patrolmen opening fire on the man. The suspect was taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where he died a short time later.

No deputies were injured.

Willison said the female victim, also not identified, was hospitalized with serious injuries, adding that she remains in critical condition. The deputy who fired the fatal shot has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation, a routine practice under the sheriff's protocol.
