Apple's iPad Gets FAA Approval

American Airlines pilots will be able to use the tablet instead of paper maps.

Apple is cornering a new market: the cockpit.

The Cupertino-based technology company has won approval from the Federal Aviation Association to have pilots use iPads while flying.

American Airlines reportedly won the approval from the FAA for its pilots to be able to use Apple's tablet computer "as electronic chart and digital flight manual readers."

The airline becomes the first to win approval to use the tablet, which will reportedly replace 35 pounds of paper per tablet used.

That translates to about $1.2 million in annual fuel savings.
