Apple Completes Largest Purchase Since NeXT

Apple has reportedly completed its largest purchase since acquiring NeXT and Steve Jobs in 1997.

The Cupertino-based technology company reportedly paid up to $500 million to purchase flash manufacturer Anobit.

Apple paid about $472 million for NeXT when inflation is taken into account.

The Israeli company makes a flash chip that Apple uses in its iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air computers and the move reinforces Apple's commitment to flash memory.

Anobit also boasts to have the world's fastest embedded Flash controller for both smartphones and tablets, which is good news for Apple as it expands its tablet and smartphone market.

Gigaom reports that flash memory has the added benefit of running cooler than other types of storage, which gives the computer-maker more freedrom when developing its products.
