Woman Assaults Friend Who Gave Her Ride Home

A woman attacked a friend who was driving her home from Atlantic City and then assaulted three police officers involved in her arrest, authorities said.

The Press of Atlantic City said 24-year-old Shannon Walsh, of Sayreville, also allegedly assaulted her friend's 3-year-old son during the incident, which occurred Friday morning. But it was not clear what sparked the incident.

Walsh called her friend, a 26-year-old Monmouth County resident, and asked for a ride home following a night out, authorities said. But Walsh allegedly began assaulting the friend as the woman drove westbound on the White Horse Pike with her son in the vehicle.

The driver called 911 around 10 a.m., and authorities said a police officer saw Walsh hit the driver and grab the steering wheel in an apparent attempt to force a crash.

Walsh initially fled from the officer after the vehicle stopped, but then began assaulting him, authorities said. She was soon restrained and put in the rear of a police cruiser, but somehow got out of her the handcuffs and tried to kick out the car windows.

As two officers tried to restrain Walsh, she allegedly kicked both of them in the legs and groin.

Walsh was later taken to a hospital for evaluation, but further details were not released.

Walsh was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, as well as three counts each of aggravated assault on police officers and resisting arrest.

Bail for Walsh was set at $75,000. It was not known Sunday if she has retained a lawyer.
