The British are furious. A bakery in Vienna, Virginia, just won a competition to make the best English-style baked goods in the world.

Pure Pasty Company won an international contest in Cornwall on Saturday, after judges determined they made the best Cornish pasty. The savory baked good dates back to England in the 1700s.

Out of more than 200 entries at the World Pasty Championships baking contest, the Virginia bakers took home the top prize. They won with an unconventional recipe that included barbecue pulled chicken, sweet potato, red pepper, sweet corn and pineapple.

“I don’t want to gloat, but [I’m feeling] pretty good. Some Americans came over and took their prize,” chef Stuart Moll said.

The British media did not seem amused by the Americans' win.

"If you thought a great Cornish pasty was filled with meat, potatoes and other vegs in a crimped pastry, you'd be seriously mistaken, it appears," the Daily Mail mused.

The Sun called the winner "controversial" and put the apparently stunning word "pineapple" in all capital letters in their headline.

A British man at Pure Pasty on Tuesday said he was not pleased by the win.

"I’m quite upset actually,” he said. “Or maybe they bribed the judges. I don’t know.”
