Fugitive on the Run More Than 20 Years Shoots at US Marshals in Queens: Sources

A fugitive who had been on the run for decades and is a suspect in a violent stabbing in Brooklyn shot at U.S. Marshals in Queens early Wednesday, law enforcement sources say.

The marshals were working with NYPD officers when they tracked the man down at an apartment in Springfield Gardens, near John F. Kennedy airport, sources say.

With a warrant in hand, they went inside the apartment, which sources say was dark with the only light coming from a flickering TV. The suspect, who was hidden, then suddenly began firing at the officers with two guns.

The officers returned fire, hitting the man in the hand and arm.

No marshals or police officers were hit by gunfire. The suspect was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

Sources identify the suspect as Oswald Lewis and say he had been on the run since 1991. He was wanted on a charge of conspiring to distribute crack cocaine in Virginia. He's also a suspect in a stabbing in Brooklyn.

It’s the second time fugitives have shot at U.S. Marshals in the city this summer. Last month, two marshals and an NYPD officer were shot in a gun battle with an accused child molester in a Greenwich Village smoke shop.

The marshals and police officer were both taken to the hospital after that shootout. The suspect, Charles Mozdir, was killed.
