Thousands Turn Out for UConn's HuskyTHON Dance Marathon

A major dance marathon is underway at the University of Connecticut.

Thousands of students turned out for the HuskyTHON Dance Marathon, UConn’s annual fundraiser for Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. The students will dance for 18 hours straight, from 6 p.m. Saturday to 12 p.m. Sunday.

“I’m really excited,” said UConn sophomore Kelly Rose Yaeger. “It’s going to be a long night but I’m excited for it. It’s going to be fun.”

HuskyTHON is the largest student-run philanthropy event in New England and this year it was named the 11th top collegiate fundraiser in the nation by Children’s Miracle network Hospitals. Student teams organize year-long fundraising events leading up to the Dance Marathon. Each team also sponsors a child throughout the year who also attends the marathon.

Every year students hope to break the donation record. Last year students raised $560,104.55. The money goes toward research and to the families who need treatment.

“About two years ago we built a whole new cardio, cardiology center so when I got to visit we got to see the whole section of it and it’s a good feeling to know where your money is going,” said UConn junior Kayla Michelson.

Students have been hitting the dance floor for over 15 years. For more information, check out the HuskyTHON website.
