Target Registers Up and Running After 2-Hour Outage

Target, which operates more than 1,850 stores throughout the country, said that an internal review did not find any evidence of a data breach or security issue

Checkout registers at Target stores throughout the nation were back up and running Saturday evening after going dark earlier in the day.

The temporary outage, which lasted about two hours, was caused by an "internal technology issue" that resulted in long lines and frustrated customers from Pennsylvania and New Jersey to Washington, D.C., Chicago, Texas and California.

On social media, people used the hashtags #targetdown, #TARGETGEDDON and #TargetApocalypse2019 to share their shopping nightmares.

Target, which operates more than 1,850 stores throughout the country, said that an internal review did not find any evidence of a data breach or security issue.

"Our technology team worked quickly to identify and fix the issue, and we apologize for the inconvenience and frustration this caused for our guests," Target said in an emailed statement. "No guest information was compromised at any time."

In 2013, some 40 million credit and debit card accounts belonging to Target shoppers were affected by a massive security breach. The company settled for $18.5 million in 2017.
