Study Finds Men Eat to Impress on Dates

A new study by Cornell University found the more men like a woman, the more they will eat. Not only a little more, but nearly double the amount of food

The next time you’re on a date and unsure of how your potential suitor feels about you, just take a look at his plate.

A new study by Cornell University found the more men like a woman, the more they will eat β€” not only a little more, but nearly double the amount of food.

According to the study, Cornell researchers observed men eating pizza at an Italian restaurant and found that men who were on a date with a woman ate a staggering 93 percent more pizza than those who were eating with other men.

The findings remained the same for healthy eaters too. Men ate 86 percent more salad when on a date with a woman than they did with their male buddies.

Seems strange, right? But researchers believe it’s a matter of science.

Kevin Kniffin, visiting assistant professor at the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management and lead author of the study, said it’s a way for men to "demonstrate prowess" to the opposite sex.

"Men tend to overeat to show off," Kniffin said. "Instead of a feat of strength, it’s a feat of eating."

Conversely, they found the women on dates did the opposite: ate much less but still left feeling like they overdid it β€” and reported feeling rushed throughout the meal with a man.

"The findings are clear that people should calm down when eating with members of the opposite sex," Kniffin wrote in the full text of the study, published by Springer. "Men seem to be eating more, and women feel like they overate."
