Street Sweeper Charged With DWI on Long Island

A 48-year-old man is accused of driving a street sweeper on Long Island while drunk on New Year's day.

Police say they tried to pull over Jerry Mitchell, of Brooklyn, after receiving reports of an erratic street sweeper on the Southern State Parkway near Exit 17 Thursday evening.

Mitchell fled and led police on a brief low-speed chase, traveling at about 35 mph before eventually pulling over.

Mitchell was charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated unlicensed operation and other traffic violations.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday. Information on an attorney for Mitchell was not immediately available.
