The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School ice hockey team won the Florida championship Sunday, 11 days after a gunman killed 17 of their classmates and school staff members.

The fourth-seeded Eagles upset top-ranked East Lake 3-1 in the Sunday morning semifinals at a minor-league rink near Fort Myers, then routed Tampa Jesuit 7-4 in the afternoon finals.
Ice hockey in Florida is a club sport sponsored by Statewide Amateur Hockey of Florida.

The fourth-seeded Eagles upset top-ranked East Lake 3-1 in the Sunday morning semifinals at a minor-league rink near Fort Myers, then routed Tampa Jesuit 7-4 in the afternoon finals.

"We played for them. So passionate. So emotional. It's all for them," said one of the players.

Many of the athletes who played in Sunday's game are emotionally exhausted from attending funeral after funeral.

"We almost didn't come here because we didn't know if we wanted to play or not," said one athlete.

The 17 players each received a medal after the game. Each medal was a tribute to one of the victims of the tragic shooting.

"We plan to bring all the medals to the school when we go home," said one of the players on the team. "There were 17 of us on the ice. We plan to put one medal on every single person that passed away."
