Rhode Island Beach Evacuated After Possible Explosion

A beach in Narragansett, Rhode Island, was evacuated Saturday after a woman in her 50s was hurt in a possible explosion.

The Rhode Island Deaprtment of Environmental Management investigated reports of an explosion around 11:20 a.m. at Salty Brine State Beach.

Witnesses told necn affiliate WJAR that the woman was thrown several feet in the air and may have struck some rocks nearby.

"The investigation included physical searches, K-9 searches and numerous interviews that corroborated initial reports of a loud bang," said Col. Steven O'Donnell. "However, no evidence indicated any type of an explosive device."

Officials do not believe the public is in any danger.

The DEM added that it plans to reopen the beach Sunday.
