Rattlesnake Bites Woman on Foot While in Her Bathroom

Animal control officials responded to the area after the bite and caught the snake.

A California woman is recovering Wednesday from a rattlesnake bite after she encountered the poisonous reptile in her bathroom the night before.

The 66-year-old Orange County woman was bitten on the foot just before 8 p.m. in her Anaheim Hills home, according to the Newport Beach Fire Department.

She was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Animal control officials responded to the area after the bite was reported and said they corralled the snake, documented it and released it into its natural habitat a good distance from the neighborhood.

The bite was all the buzz around the close-knit community Wednesday morning.

"We see them here and there, a lot of garden snakes we see them all the time," neighbor Reuben Bedi said. "About five or six years ago we had a bobcat in our backyard, so we're used to this kind of activity I guess."

Susan Contreras said her dog was bit last week by a snake. It was "touch and go" because he's elderly she said, but he's "OK."

Releasing the snake back into its natural habitat isn't always an option. Animal control officials said it's a case-by-case basis when they make those decisions.

In most cases, they added, the snakes are looking for food and need to be pushed in the right direction.
