Pope Francis' 1st U.S. Popemobile Is a Fiat

Pope Francis may be in the U.S., but his taste in cars is apparently still back in Italy.

After arriving at Joint Base Andrews in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, the Bishop of Rome stepped into a Fiat 500 – one of Italy's most iconic cars.

The image of one of the world's most holy men stepping into such a small car immediately caused a stir on social media.

Technically, the Fiat wasn't a popemobile – the vehicle in which he can stand and wave to crowds. The pope's American popemobile will in fact be a Jeep Wrangler.

This isn't Pope Francis' first time in a Fiat. Just last year, he was driven through Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in a small, silver Fiat after security was unable to control the local crowds, all "at his own request," NBC News reported last year.

None of this was was lost on the Italian car company, which retweeted a picture of the papal Fiat, adding simply: "#blessed."
