Pope Francis visited a slum in Nairobi, Kenya, on Friday, calling for adequate and dignified housing for society’s most marginal, The Associated Press reported.
Kangemi is one of 11 slums in Nairobi and has about 50,000 residents living without basic sanitation.
The pope referred to the problem of urban shanties when speaking to the African U.N. headquarters on Thursday, saying everyone has the right to “dignified living conditions,” and that local residents’ views must be taken into account when new constructions are designed.
Francis is due to arrive in the Central African Republic on the next leg of his trip, where there is ongoing conflicts between Christians and Muslims.
