Police Fatally Shoot Okla. Man After Flood Rescue Turns Ugly

Police said the man assaulted one of the troopers after an argument.

An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper fatally shot an allegedly armed man Friday night when he attempted to fight officers attempting to evacuate him and another man from a car stranded in floodwaters, authorities said.

The two troopers were dispatched to help Nehemiah Fischer, 35, and Brandon Fischer, 40, who were trying to get their stalled car out of the rising water.

Troopers convinced the men to get out of the car, but they started arguing, and one attacked a trooper, Oklahoma Highway Patrol Capt. Paul Timmons told NBC affiliate KJRH.

The victim, 35-year-old Nehemiah Fischer, had a handgun on him when he was shot, Timmons said. Brandon Fischer was not shot, but arrested and taken to jail.

The younger Fischer died at the scene, The Associated Press reported. Timmons did not know whether one or both troopers fired shots or how many were fired. He said it's unclear whether the men were armed.
