Mom Found Dead, Husband Arrested After Pair OD in Children's Hospital

Ohio authorities say an Alabama woman is dead and her husband in custody after both suffered heroin overdoses in the hospital room where their 7-month-old daughter was recovering just hours after surgery.

Police say 31-year-old Mary Ann Landers of Trinity, Alabama, was found unconscious Thursday morning at around 10:30 a.m. ET in a room at Cincinnati Children's Medical Center.

According to a criminal complaint, her 32-year-old husband, Wesley Landers, was unconscious in the bathroom with a heroin syringe in his arm, NBC affiliate WLWT reported. There were two other heroin syringes on the bathroom sink counter, the complaint states.

Mary Ann Landers died, but her husband was revived and taken to UC Medical Center for treatment, WLWT reported. He was later arrested on drug and weapons charges after authorities said they found a loaded gun in his pocket.

"You think, how could they, caring parents that are willing to travel hundreds of miles to take their child to get the best care that the child could get, how could they do this to themselves? It just goes to show you that how desperate they were," Hamilton County Coroner, Dr. Lakshmi Sammarco, told WLWT.

Landers appeared in court Friday, where bond was set at $400,000.

An attorney for Wesley Landers did not return a phone call from The Associate Press Friday. A friend of Mary Ann Landers described her as a good mother who didn't do drugs.
