5 Shot Near Black Lives Matter Encampment in Minneapolis

Police were searching for three suspects early Tuesday after five people were shot near a Black Lives Matter protest in Minneapolis, NBC News reported.

All five of the victims were transferred to hospital with non-life threatening injuries on Monday, the Minneapolis Police Department said in a statement.

The shooting happened near a police precinct where demonstrators and activists have been protesting for more than a week the death of Jamar Clark, who was shot by police during a scuffle on Nov. 15.

Minneapolis' local Black Lives Matter group were among dozens claiming on Twitter that the shooters were "white supremacists." Police described the three suspects as white men.

Minneapolis Police Department spokesman John Elder said it was "way too early in this investigation" to make a statement about the white supremacist claim.
