Man Dies in Houston Jail After Public Intoxication Arrest

A 33-year-old man was found dead in a Houston jail about eight hours after being arrested for public intoxication.

The Houston Chronicle reported that the man was arrested after a disturbance at a Houston west side store at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. He was also charged with resisting arrest.

Houston Police Department spokesman Kese Smith said the man acted belligerently after he was booked.

Smith said the man was cleared by staff and placed in a cell by himself around 2:30 a.m. He was alert when he was checked at 9:15 a.m. and was unresponsive 15 minutes later.

Smith said medical staff was unable to revive him and that an autopsy is pending.

The man's identity has not been released. An investigation into the death is ongoing.
