Kids in Stolen Car Unharmed, Thief Arrested

A parent left the keys in the car while they ran into a convenience store in Pompano Beach and almost lost more than just the car that was stolen.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office said 35-year-old Hendri Du Preez got into the car that was running at the convenience store on the 800 block of S. Dixie Highway West. But the car also had the one-year-old and three-year-old children of the owner inside.

According to the BSO, Du Preez removed both kids in their car seats and put them both in the bed of a pickup truck on the 1700 block of NE 62nd Street in Fort Lauderdale. The owner of the truck found the kids in the truck bed where both were crying hysterically.

The boys were reunited with their mother and were unharmed in the incident.

BSO said they caught up with Du Preez and took him into custody on the 600 block of NW 4th Avenue in Pompano Beach. He is being held on $75,000 bond and charged with grand theft auto, kidnapping and child neglect.
