Florida Deputy Saves Choking Girl on His First Day on Job

A Florida sheriff's deputy saved the life of a choking girl on his first day on the job.

Volusia County Sheriff's Deputy Brant Lickiss was stopped at a traffic light on Saturday afternoon when he saw a woman pull into a driveway, jump from the car and pull a child from the back seat.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports Lickiss was working his first full-time patrol shift in Deltona. He stopped and approached the pair, but the woman didn't answer his questions because of a language barrier. She put her hands to her own throat to indicate the child was choking.

The deputy started striking the child on the back. After three tries, a piece of hard candy flew out of the child's mouth.

A rescue crew checked the girl, who was fine.
