Florida Bill Would Keep Daylight Saving Time Year-Round

A new bill proposed in Florida would keep daylight saving time year round.

Dubbed the "Sunshine Protection Act," HB 893 was filed Friday by State Rep. Kristin Jacobs, a Democrat from Coconut Creek. The proposal will be considered during the state's 2016 legislative session, NBC affiliate WPTV reports.

"As the 'Sunshine State,' Florida should be kept sunny year-round. ... daylight saving time shall be the year-round standard time of the entire state and all of its political subdivisions," the bill says in part.

If passed, the proposal would take effect July 1, 2016, according to a version of the bill posted online by the Florida Senate.

Daylight saving time, which results in more light during evening hours, takes effect March 13 and is set to end Nov. 6.
