From the pink chandeliers to the pink floors, it was a birthday party fit for a princess.
Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of notorious Mexican drug kingpin Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, took to Instagram Monday to document the lavish “#barbiestyle" party she threw for the couple’s twin 7-year-old daughters while her husband is being held at a Manhattan jail.
The party for Emali and Maria Joaquina was held at a mansion in Culiacán, the capital of Mexico’s northwestern Sinaloa state. The Barbie-themed fiesta featured a life-size doll house and a Barbie "boutique." A pink balloon arch led into the mansion where an array of pink candy, desserts and gifts awaited guests. Outside, carnival rides and an Instagrammable pink-colored throne were par for the course.
Antonio Tizoc, the photographer who covered the event for the family, shared photos to his Instagram page, using the hashtag "maximum elegance."
In one of Tizoc’s photos, Aispuro poses in front of a giant dollhouse with a light-up "Barbie" logo.
The social media posts have sparked criticism among some.
"They have attacked me," Tizoc told the Los Angeles Times. "But in Culiacan it’s really normal to have parties like this. Rich and poor, we like big parties."
Guzman, who has twice escaped from prison in Mexico, was extradited to the U.S. in 2017. He's currently in solitary confinement awaiting trial. He has pleaded not guilty to charges that his cartel laundered billions of dollars and oversaw a ruthless campaign of murders and kidnappings. He faces life in prison if convicted.
