D.C. Mansion Murders: Cash, Knives Found Inside Slaying Suspect's Car, Documents Say

Cash, cellphones and knives were among the items found inside two vehicles seized after the arrest of Daron Wint, the suspect charged in the slayings of a northwest D.C. family and their housekeeper.

Wint, 34, was taken into custody May 21 during a traffic stop in the 1000 block of Rhode Island Avenue NE. Two vehicles, a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze and a Ford box truck, were towed away from the scene and later searched. Wint was a passenger in the Chevy Cruze.

The people taken into custody along with Wint were not formally charged or arrested.

Investigators found money orders, cash, two knives, clothing, cellphones, and various receipts inside the Cruze, according to a search warrant. Cash, money orders and a cellphone were inside the box truck, according to another warrant.

The home is no longer a crime scene, and has been turned over to the family, police said.

Wint is charged in the deaths of 46-year-old Savvas Savopoulos; his 47-year-old wife, Amy; their son, Philip; and housekeeper Veralicia Figueroa. Their bodies were found in the Savopoulos family's burning mansion May 14.

Police say they linked Wint to the scene through DNA found on the crust of a Domino's pizza delivered to the Savopoulos home Wednesday night. Police believe the family was held hostage and threatened overnight.

Savvas Savopoulos served as CEO at  American Iron Works, where Wint worked as a welder from 2003 to 2005, sources said.

Authorities are also searching the car and cellphone records of Savvas Savopoulos' assistant, Jordan Wallace, who at one point lied to police about details involving the delivery of a package containing $40,000 cash on the day of the killings.

Police have said in charging documents they believe Wint had help from others holding the Savopouloses captive inside their northwest Washington mansion for at least 18 hours. But no other suspects have been identified.
