Corrections Officer Kicks, Stomps Cuffed Inmate: Prosecutors

A South Jersey corrections officer who allegedly kicked and stomped a county jail inmate after the man was subdued and handcuffed has been charged with aggravated assault.

Camden County prosecutors said 43-year-old John Stinsman, of Pennsauken, is also charged with official misconduct and simple assault. The charges were filed Thursday and made public Monday.

Stinsman was freed after posting $50,000 bail. A telephone number for him could not be located Monday.

The charges against Stinsman, a sergeant with the county's corrections department, stem from an incident at the county jail last October.

Prosecutors said video surveillance footage shows Stinsman attacking the inmate after he was subdued and handcuffed, which is contrary to an incident report he prepared.

Jail officials learned of the assault during a routine review of reports and video surveillance footage. They then reported it to the prosecutor's office.
