Bill Banning NYC Horse Carriages Introduced

Supporters and opponents of a move to ban carriage horses in New York City made their cases as a bill that gets rid of the industry was introduced to the City Council.

Both sides held rallies at City Hall on Monday.

Councilmembers Daniel Dromm and Ydanis Rodriguez introduced the legislation and were joined by supporters who said it was cruel and inhumane to allow horses on city streets.

Other councilmembers joined carriage drivers and union members to speak out in support of the industry, saying the horses were well taken care of, and eliminating the industry would be a blow to the drivers and their families.

The ban to end the rides, which are popular with some Manhattan tourists, was a 2013 campaign promise of Mayor Bill de Blasio.
