Presidential Candidates Campaign in New Jersey

Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are focusing on New Jersey a month ahead of the state's primary. NBC10's Drew Smith has the details. (Published Sunday, May 8, 2016)

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was in New Jersey for a campaign rally at the state's flagship university.

The Vermont senator spoke in front of thousands of people at the Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway Sunday afternoon.

Sanders spoke about his plans to make public colleges and universities tuition-free, combat climate change and ensure universal health care. He also addressed concerns that he would have less of a chance than Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton at defeating Donald Trump in a general election.

"Donald Trump must not become president and I am happy to tell you that Donald Trump will not become president of the United States," Sanders said.

Sanders cited national and state polls which he claimed showed that he would defeat Trump by margins nearly twice as much as Clinton would.

"If Democrats want to have the strongest candidate against Donald Trump they should look at those polls," Sanders said.

The rally was the first of two that Sanders planned in New Jersey. The other is scheduled for Monday morning in Atlantic City.

Sanders currently trails Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary.

New Jersey voters head to the polls on June 7.
