Rep. Ayanna Pressley Backs Warren for President, Citing Her Fighting for the People

In a video announcing her endorsement, Pressley cited Warren's well-known litany of plans she'd push to implement president

Rep. Ayanna Pressley backed fellow Massachusetts Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren in her bid to be president Wednesday, citing the way the senator has been fighting for the people.

Pressley's endorsement adds a prominent progressive voice to Warren's list of supporters. It's also a break from the other three members of the "squad," Democratic freshmen female representatives of color who have been sharp critics of President Donald Trump, who backed Sen. Bernie Sanders.

In a video announcing her endorsement, Pressley cited Warren's well-known litany of plans she'd push to implement president.

"The plans are about power: who has it, who refuses to let it go and who deserves more of it," Pressley said.

Warren tweeted her thanks, adding, "I'm proud to be fighting alongside you to put power in the hands of the people."

Pressley is Massachusetts' first black woman elected to Congress. She'd been a member of Boston City Council, becoming the first women of color to serve there.

Warren and Pressley have both traveled in Boston's political powers, and Pressley said she's seen Warren be consistent throughout: "She never loses sight of the people."

Pressley's backing was highly sought after in the crowded Democratic primary field after the other members of the "squad," Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, threw their hats in for Sanders.

Pressley said on Monday that she'd been courted by the Warren and Sanders campaigns, as well as former Vice President Joe Biden's.

Warren has been near the top of most recent presidential polls, along with Biden and Sanders, but the two senators are far behind Biden in racking up meaningful endorsements, according to a tally kept by FiveThirtyEight.
