Mother Killed in Head-On Car Crash on Sunset Boulevard

A head-on car crash on a winding stretch of Sunset Boulevard in Holmby Hills left a mother dead and her husband and daughter injured, police said Saturday.

Investigators said the driver of a Maserati was traveling westbound between Mapleton Drive and Charing Cross Road before 6:15 p.m. when he crossed into opposite lanes and collided with a Honda carrying the family.

The driver of the Honda, a mother in her 50s, became trapped in the wreckage. She was declared dead at the scene, police said.

Her husband and daughter were taken to the hospital. He suffered broken ribs. The daughter was expected to be OK.

The driver of the Maserati was not hurt, police said. He was cooperating with investigators.

Drugs or alcohol did not appear to have played a role, police said.

It was unclear if the driver, a man in his 50s or 60s, was facing criminal charges.

No further details on the crash were released.

Police shut down Sunset Boulevard between Mapleton Drive and Charing Cross Road during the investigation but re-opened it just after 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
