Suspect, Victim ID'd in Chula Vista Home Shooting Death

A woman was reportedly shot and killed by her husbandโ€™s son Saturday afternoon in Chula Vista, according to the Chula Vista Police Department.

Norberto Sanchez, 55, now faces a murder charge following the shooting that happened at around 1:30 p.m. on Oasis Avenue in a quiet neighborhood near Greg Rogers Park, CVPD said.

Sanchez reportedly called his niece and told her he had just killed his fatherโ€™s wife, according to police. His niece then called 911.

When police arrived, they found Maria Esther Gonzalez, 65, inside the home. The man was arrested without incident at a different home, CVPD Sgt. David Oyos told NBC 7.

Gonzalez succumbed to her apparent gunshot injuries, CVPD said.

Alberto Hurtado, a longtime neighbor, told NBC 7 the family has lived in the home for many years and the son lived there off and on.

"From what I hear, there's been conflict in the house for a while and he wasn't very stable," Hurtado said. "Then this happened."

He said anything little thing could set the suspect off.

Investigators told NBC 7 they found several guns in the home but it was unclear if one of them was the reported murder weapon.

Neighbors said they want the family to know they're in their thoughts and prayers.

"It's just sad," Hurtado said. "It's tragic. It's just uncalled for."

Some family members gathered at the crime scene to comfort each other.

"Obviously, the family is distraught they lost a loved one and so ... we have a support team out there with them to give them some emotional support while they share with us the information they know," Oyos said.
