A woman who had gotten up to use the restroom on a party bus over the weekend in San Diego County fell out of the bus and into traffic on Interstate 5, suffering serious injuries.

The bizarre incident happened Saturday at around 8:10 p.m. as a limo bus traveled north on I-5 in National City, just south of Civic Center Drive.

According to the California Highway Patrol, one of the women aboard the bus got up to use the bathroom and, for reason still under investigation, she opened the rear emergency door and fell into the traffic lanes.

CHP Public Information Officer Salvador Castro said the party bus driver pulled over just south of Main Street and good Samaritans rushed to help the woman. She was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, the CHP said.

The CHP said the woman hit her head in the fall.

No one else was hurt.

Officials have not released further details on how or why the woman opened the rear door. She remains hospitalized in serious condition.
