Woman Killed in Oceanside Shooting ID'd as Navy Corpsman

Her neighbor was arrested on suspicion of her killing but police said they don't know what the motive was

A woman killed Friday at her Oceanside apartment complex was identified Saturday as a Navy Corpsman, police said.

Devon Rideout, 24, was found with gunshot wounds just before 4 p.m. at the 500 block of Los Arbolitos Boulevard, Oceanside police spokesman Tom Bussey said.

First responders tried to revive Rideout but she died at the scene.

Rideout was a Navy Corpsman at Camp Pendleton.

Rideout's mother spent much of the day in and out of her door, in tears in the place where her daughter was gunned down.
She didn't want to speak reporters Saturday. She said she wasn't in the mood to answer questions, perhaps searching for answers of her own

Rideout's mother spent much of Saturday in and out of her door in tears in the place where her daughter was gunned down.

She didn't want to speak reporters Saturday. She said she wasn't in the mood to answer questions.

Around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, police arrested Eduardo Arriola, 25, on suspicion of her murder. There was no connection between the two other than he lives in the same complex as Rideout, Bussey said.

He lives directly upstairs from Rideout.

On Saturday morning, friends carrying flowers were stopping by to see Rideout's family. Others left a makeshift memorial in breezeway where she saw she shot.

One neighbor who lives across the hall from the victim says suspect seemed very nice. She would often see them as she came home from work.

"Him and his brother are always hanging out on the stairs and stuff," Cassandra Rugel, 17, said. "They're really quiet, nice people. That was kind of surprising."

Rugel's mother said the suspect was very polite, greeting her saying, "Good morning, ma'am" and "Have a nice day."

They were not at the apartment when the shooting occurred.

But when Rugel mother came home with police surrounding the area by her front door, she was terrified.

"She was scared," Rugel said. "She thought it was me because when she got home it was just a bag over the body."

Rugel, like her neighbors, was stunned that this would happen in front of their homes.

"I was pretty shaken," she said. "Me and my mom didn't bother coming home last night. It's kind of hard passing by so I walk around now."

Oceanside police said there was no known motive for the shooting but officers came back around 7:30 p.m. Saturday take more photos and talk to the family.

They didn't say why.

Arriola is being held on one count of first-degree murder. He is expected to be arraigned in court Tuesday.
