Witnesses Sought in Fatal Bike Accident

Balboa Ave. off-ramp shut down after two cars hit bicyclist

Police are seeking witnesses to a collision that killed a bicyclist in Kearny Mesa Thursday morning.

A detective said the man, now identified as 29-year-old David Ortiz, was struck by a Ford expedition on Balboa Ave over I-805. Ortiz then rolled and was hit by two other cars in different lanes. The last car ended up on top of his body.

Ortiz was riding a black road bike and wearing a dark jacket, grey shorts and a backpack.

The Police Department's Traffic Investigation will reconstruct the events leading up to the collision.

Balboa Ave. does not have a bike lane; just three travel lanes and a transition lane. Ortiz was wearing a helmet. After the collision, the helmet was destroyed.

Ortiz's body was in the correct area where he should've been biking, however it's unclear if that's where he was when the first car hit him, said. Officer Mark McCullough with the San Diego Police Department.

Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to contact Detective John Letteri of the Traffic Investigation Unit at (858) 495-7806.

Ed. Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the driver of a blue Ford Expedition fled the scene. Traffic division authorities later confirmed that the driver cooperated with the investigation.
