Water Main Breaks, Causes Sinkhole on a Poway Road

A sinkhole opened up on a Poway road, causing traffic for some commuters, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department (SDSO) said.

The sinkhole, approximately five to six feet deep, opened up on the 16000 block of Martincoit Road near Painted Rock Elementary School.

According to the City of Poway Public Works, there were no injuries and no cars fell in.

A 12 to 16-inch water main broke, causing the sinkhole.

A contractor was taking soil samples on the road Tuesday for a different project when they knicked a water main line, officials said.

Crews repaired the line but when they recharged it, there was a leak up the road, causing the sinkhole.

No customers were without water, officials said.

The northbound lane on Martincoit Road was closed down to motorists.

Repairs were expected to take be wrapped up by 9:15 p.m. and the road should be reopened to traffic by 9:30 p.m.
