A San Diego judge has ordered workers to stop construction of a Walmart at the iconic Farmers Market Building in Sherman Heights.
The partial demolition of the nearly century-old building on Imperial Avenue began Tuesday, but was put on hold Wednesday.
Neighbors were shocked at how much of the historic building was actually being torn down in the Walmart construction process.
Walmart has said they have city permits for construction on the site and plan to keep most of the building’s original façade.
For now, however, workers are on standby until at least Monday, when a restraining order against the demolition will be considered at a hearing.
On Friday, Steve Restivo, Senior Director of Community Affairs at Walmart, released a statement regarding the Sherman Heights Walmart construction.
"Over the past several months, we have engaged with the community - including the offices of the Councilmember and Assemblymember - to listen, answer questions and share information about our plans in Sherman Heights. It's clear that the majority of folks support the jobs our store will bring as well as the new, more affordable grocery options the Neighborhood Market will deliver. We look forward to a favorable ruling on Monday that allows us to proceed and start serving customers as soon as possible," said Restivo.
