Woman's body found at Vista home, man arrested for murder after SWAT standoff: SDSO

NBC Universal, Inc.

A woman's body was found at a home in Vista and a man was detained after an hours-long SWAT standoff ended Wednesday, authorities said.

Just after 10 a.m., deputies received a call to a home on the 700 block of North Citrus Avenue requesting a welfare check for someone inside the home, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

When deputies arrived, they found a woman's body with obvious signs of trauma. Deputies then did a sweep of the home and found a man barricaded inside.

On Thursday, police identified the man as Malcolm Pope, 26.

They say they negotiated with Pope, but he refused to come out. That's when the SWAT team and crisis negotiators were called in.

SDSO says at one point, chemical agents were deployed into the home, which motivated Pope, who they said Wednesday had been arrested for murder, to come out of the home.

The sheriff's department says this appears to be an isolated incident and that there is no threat to the community.

Authorities also would not disclose Pope's relationship to the victim, if any, or reveal any suspected motive for the alleged murder.

"We are not ready to release detailed information as of now," San Diego Sheriff's Lt. Juan Marquez said Thursday afternoon.

Pope was being held at San Diego Central Jail without bail pending his arraignment in the case, scheduled for Friday.

Officials are withholding the victim's name pending family notification.
