USS Freedom Returns From First Deployment

The crew of USS Freedom returned home just in time for the Christmas and New Year holidays as it sailed into San Diego Bay Monday.

Sailors were welcomed home to Naval Base San Diego by family and friends waiting at the dock.

The littoral combat ship returned to its home-port from its very first deployment.

It's been out at sea since March.

The ship has two crews of 53 sailors each, plus air and other detachments.

USS Freedom is a new type of ship designed to fight in coastal waters.

During its deployment, the Freedom patrolled Southeast Asia, and joined exercises with allied navies.

It also helped deliver supplies to typhoon victims in the Philippines.
