U.S. Soccer Brings International Paralympic Tournament to San Diego

The U.S. Paralympic National Team to host Australia and Canada in July

One of America’s teams is heading to America’s Finest City.

The U.S. Paralympic Soccer Team announced they’ll host Australia and Canada in the 2018 Para 7-a-side Invitational. The tournament will be held at the Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista from July 18-21.

Wednesday will feature a closed friendly between the USPNT and Australia at 3 p.m. But the public is invited to the matches taking place Thursday-Saturday.

U.S. and Australia face each other again Thursday at 5 p.m. in game one. Game two takes place Friday between Australia and Canada at 5 p.m. before the series wraps up Saturday with the USPNT playing Canada at 5 p.m.

San Diego natives David Garza and Mason Abbiate are frequent members of the U.S. Paralympic Team roster and both competed with the USPNT at the Paralympic Games in Brazil in 2016.

The USPNT finished second at the 13th International Trophy CP Football Tournament in Barcelona and are preparing for the 2018 IFCPF Copa America that takes place in October in Natal, Brazil.

"Organizing these games at this time will be extremely beneficial for us to test ourselves against international competition ahead of the Copa America in October," said U.S. Paralympic National Team head coach Stuart Sharp. "We've recruited quite a few new players and have created a completely different game model from what we've been using across the past four years."
