UCSD Named Top Surfing College in U.S.

When high school seniors are looking for a college they may consider dorm or off-campus, student parking or transit access or possibly even if the school offers their major.

But for surfers, the list of potential colleges is small if they want to be able to sneak away for a set between classes.

To help sort through the clutter, Surfline.com compiled its list of the top 10 best surf schools in America.

Topping the list is University of California San Diego and its proximity to the coast and Blacks Beach “widely regarded as one of the best sand-bottom A-frames in California” according to the magazine.

One of the school’s features that got it noticed is its lineup of surfing professors. “Who says surfers are a bunch of dummies? UCSD has enough surfing MENSA candidates to clog up the lineup at Windansea,” the surfing site noted.

Surfing magazine publishers, surfing filmmakers and surfboard makers are among the surfing alumni listed. The magazine also mentions the school’s connection to Benicio Del Toro – not for surfing, just because of his Oscar win.

Is it tough to get in? Only Surfline can put it like this: “Comparable to a 6-foot triple-up behind the boil at Big Rock: good luck. Average high school GPA: 3.98.”

UCSD bested University of Hawaii, UC Santa Cruz, Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara.
